Ruddy Shelduck this morning close by road - observed from 4th lay-by past Glencaple. Robbie Purdie.

Saturday 25th. Shelduck 8, Goosander 15, Avocet 45 (already noted), Ringed Plover 1, Lapwing 100, Curlew 50, Black-tailed Godwit 13, Common Sandpiper 5, Redshank 75, Dunlin 50, Little Egret 1.

A Willow Tit in the vicinity recently. 

25th. 45 Avocet feeding on the falling tide & presumably straddling the border with England to whatever extent.

Apparently seen earlier at Kennethbank nr Glencaple. Current location unknown. Probably escapee I'm told. 

Quail year continues with a bird calling still at RSPB Crook of Baldoon. Has a WWT Ibis jumped ship & turning up at RSPB Mersehead lunchtime today? Also, another Quail heard there mid pm. 

23rd. Quail NE of Lockerbie, nr Boreland. At least 1 Willow Tit nr Stroan Loch, Raiders Road. GWE flying upriver on the Dee at Threave NTS.

Not much water & mud left on Folly Pond to hold a passage migrant now. The 2 Glossy Ibis for the time being remain tripping between ponds with more water & the remnants of Folly. 2 White Wagtail & a Green Sandpiper briefly, spotted by bro, around Whooper Pond. Latter dived into the area of Back Pond (?). Soon afterwards a couple of photographers were poking around there so it probably flushed elsewhere. Also the juv Water Rail showed well for a while in front of the Scottish Water Hide. Plus Snipe.

As a photographer I'm always striving to level up my images, but researchers are warning bird photographers that one way to "improve" a bird photo may actually end up contaminating valuable citizen scientist databases with misleading data. In a recent op-ed from the journal Nature, researchers from citizen science databases including iNaturalist and the Macaulay Library told a startling story of a Red-Winged Blackbird found well outside its usual range in Brazil. The problem? The bird was actually a common Epaulet Oriole but, when the photographer asked an AI platform to "improve this photo", AI removed the bird's yellow coloring, making it look like an altogether differe...

Large number of returning Whimbrel, maybe 20+. A fabulous still summer Knot. A Sandwich Tern was a late addition & in the fields behind Hogus Pt, a Quail was calling a few times around 3.30-4pm.

The Med Gull in Carse Gut was harassing a Bh Gull. 4 Whimbrel on Carsethorn foreshore. Apart from the Med Gull, in Carse Bay off Carse Gut low tide, 4 Comm Sand, maybe 25 Redshank & a minimum of 130 Curlew looking like they'd just arrived. At 5.30pm a pair of Peregrine were calling & circling overhead North Carse before heading west, accompanied by a probable Sparrowhawk until they moved on.

A Pec Sand has turned up at WWT Caerlaverock Folly Pond. See pic. Also 2 juv LRP, the Wood Sandpiper still, reappearance of a Glossy Ibis, back-end of a Water Rail. Also a ♀ Marsh Harrier & Peregrine over the merse.

A calling bird still yesterday evening near the village of Whithorn, Wigtownshire.

The bird I was hoping to find last week at WWT Caerlaverock has turned up this pm. Somewhere around the most recent ponds btwn The Avenue & Saltcot Tower avenue.

Carse Loch. Calling bird 16th near Ellisland Farm, Robert Burns visitor attraction. 

Still hanging out with Shelduck flock in the Castle Corner-Caerlaverock NNR area.

12th, over 100 Common Sandpiper counted between the point and the steelworks (probably more round the corner towards the harbour). Mediterranean Gull, (summer adult) on the coast at Newbie Barns. 13th, 3 Green Sandpiper at Mein Water with 6 Common Sandpiper. Bill Jamieson.

The bird I saw at Browhouses is the same bird from 18th September 2025. Barry the ringing project organiser said back then; "BTO Ring No.GY74260. In colour-ringing speak it is LAYN(4);RARW(H). For future reference this states the ring positions and colours of rings and digits as: Left leg Above the ‘knee’ with a Yellow ring with a black (Niger) digit of 4. Right leg Above the ‘knee’ with a Red ring with White digit of H. I hope that makes sense. The position of the BTO Metal ring on the tarsus is immaterial under this scheme. This egret was ringed in the nest as one of a brood of five at Birks Wood, Rockliffe Estate, near Carlisle, by Thalia Sparke and her ringing team on 14 June 2024." 

Smart 2nd summer Mediterranean Gull off the old pier at Carsethorn today, still present. Acting very similarly to last years first summer in exactly the same spot. Gavin Chambers. 

11am. 2 still on Folly Pond WWT Caerlaverock. Also ♂️Whinchat hawking from pond fringe vegetation. Later, a juv Ruff appeared. Also a Snipe & fem type Marsh Harrier. Same or another fem type Marsh Harrier seen from Hollands Hide, Caerlaverock NNR. No Cetti's heard, no Bittern encountered. 

2 Glossy Ibis still at WWT Caerlaverock Folly Pond (probably). 2 Great Skua & 2 Storm Petrel from Cairnryan, Loch Ryan. Bittern at Caerlaverock NNR rather unexpected & potentially very sensitive.

2 still at WWT Caerlaverock, Folly Pond. Reserve not open to the public until Thursday through to Saturday.

Quail singing from the Airfield at the Crook, between the Crook and the buildings at Penkiln. Ivan Lang. 

Still offshore at Browhouses. Moving around occasionally. 1230+ Currently sat opposite cottages but on English side sandbank. Attended by GBBG. Seems to be hanging around to steal what seafood the GBBG's find to eat. Avocet still & all birds get flighty if the GS takes flight. Resting possibly on the Scottish side opposite the cottages. However, it's Browhouses foreshore, so Scotland! Image low tidish, 1430-1500.

Great Skua sat on the beach right now, flying over both sides of the border. Little Egret with colour rings; red with white H right, yellow with black 4 left. Plus 5 Greenshank, 3+ Common Sandpiper, a 1st summer (2cy) Med Gull & 23 Avocet again straddling both sides of the border, one with an unreadable yellow flag on the right & red over yellow left.

Up to 24 Avocet straddling the English border today.

Update 1330; Ruddy Shelduck with Shelduck flock on mudflats in front of storage tanks (Airds Point) opposite Glencaple, near Castle Corner. Flew off with a group to a more distant seaward sandbank. Robbie Purdie.
