[D&GBN] Carse Bay & around Southerness

Image
Carse Bay 1200 - high tide  Too late for exposed sands but a scan of the shoreline produced an apparent adult winter med gull.  Also usual 3 at least little egret.  Southerness & Gillfoot Bay  Ebbing tide post 1400. c30 knot 1 winter sanderling amongst c50 ringed plover  c200 golden plover  Many scoter offshore plus 2 fly-by guillemot & 2 gannet.  Gillfoot Bay proper 2 bar-tailed godwit 2 sandwich tern  c50-100 dunlin  Possibly 2 yellow-legged gull but uncertain with ID due to mid-grey mantle. However, summer adult plumage can be darker to my knowledge. Gillfoot Bay is very good on a falling tide.

Carse Bay & Carsethorn

Image
Falling tide c1515 until 1800 Carse Bay   2 peregrine hunting as pair & caught maybe curlew?  Maybe 40+ wigeon  2+ little egret  1 blacktailed god 3 wheatear on shingle point - 1 autumn male, 2 fem/juv Off Carsethorn   21 at least blacktailed gods  1 whimbrel  1 med gull - 1st winter with white colour ring, only noticed from pics! So, missed opportunity to read it whilst preening ๐Ÿ™„ Interesting behaviour I've seen before is the med gull harasses/attacks the bh gulls to try to steal food. Birds gorge themselves at low tide on small flounder & crabs. The bh gulls also take perhaps small fish fry?, which jump out of the water around the birds when close. Maybe a trait of young med gulls to steal food they either aren't programmed to catch, or simply haven't learned how to yet? Generally, plenty redshank & curlew. A few turnstone & single dunlin.

[D&GBN] Tarmac Quarry - Locharbriggs

1 med gull 2nd winter seen from Kilblane Quarry 1 male blackcap issuing a bit of sub-song, 1 juv whitethroat

RE: [D&GBN] The PFG?

Had skein of 80 pinks fly high over Dumfries heading for the estuary on Sunday. Small groups of barnies on the NNR last night, assumed barnies are ferals but you never know.   Adam Murphy | Nature Reserve Officer | Operational Officer NatureScot  | Greystone Park, 55-57 Moffat Road, Dumfries DG1 1NP | 07776466274 nature.scot  |  @nature_scot  |  Scotland's Nature Agency  |  Buidheann Nร dair na h-Alba   Subject: [D&GBN] The PFG?   I think I've just seen about 20+ pfg's heading east towards Kirkbean. Anyone else seen any?  NatureScot is the operating name of Scottish Natural Heritage.
