Mersehead

A nice juvenile Pale-bellied Brent Goose amongst the Barnacle Geese at Mersehead this morning, seen in field behind car park but whole flock flushed by buzzard so not sure where it's gone now. 1000's of Barnacle Geese on reserve at the moment. Also 17 Whooper Swans around, 2 on wetland and 15 on beach towards Southerness. Gavin Chambers

Hen Harrier

@WWTCaerlaverock this afternoon, a male hen harrier slid in front of the sun, above a thousand or so freshly arrived barnacle geese. Reference to afternoon suggests it was seen yesterday, 15th. Per Twitter.

Long-tailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus Corsewall Point, Dumfries & Galloway one flew past between 16:30 and 18:30; also 2 Little Gulls. Per BirdGuides.

Carse Bay & Carsethorn

1445 - 1630 : Low but rising tide.  Carse Bay; 9 black-tailed godwit in Carse Gut.  1 scaup.  9 little egret.  Carsethorn foreshore   & offshore; 2 whimbrel.  21 black-tailed godwit - retreated to Carse Bay.  1 bar-tailed godwit.  1 red-breasted merganser.  12 scaup - later seen flying further into the firth. 1 little egret.  Plus 1 chiffchaff in shore shrubbery.

  This pm; Hide side only.  1 fly through peregrine. 1 snipe.  2 ringed plover on new scrape edge.  5 hybrid canada x greylag? geese (pic). Couple chiffchaff at least in bushes. Many lapwing & usual duck.  Nothing more unusual found nor heard.   Info board says marsh harrier seen last few days. What a grey day!

[D&GBN] Southerness Zone

c1200 - 1530. Southerness Pt.  HT; 2 red-throated diver offshore. 1 grt crstd grebe.  2 knot plus usual waders on the rocks.  East Mersehead Bay; Heat haze in v warm sunshine. c500 or more golden plover.  Ringed plovers, dunlin, knot, odd sanderling but swarovski bins toting gentleman allowing his dog to chase the birds. ๐Ÿ™„ 1 autumn wheatear, probably female.  Around 13th golf tee ; 1 rock pipit.  1 autumn female wheatear, probably same bird.  Gillfoot Bay; 4 sanderling, inc couple of juvs.  c200 dunlin. 7 bar-tailed godwit. 8-10 knot. 1 swallow.  50 pink-foots later on.  Widely dispersed golden plover, ringed plovers, curlew etc from Mersehead Bay HT roost...  Plus ; Chiffchaff in the garden Mainsriddle this am.

In case anyone hasn't checked with latest sightings, the team confirm the GWE is still around, frequenting the merse.  Also 2 hen harriers around the reserve.

Ever the optimist....  1545 - 1730 falling tide; Great visibility this afternoon.  Carse Bay & Carse Gut   1 ad winter med gull - nice to see again; 1 black-tailed godwit; 1 peregrine -  on the merse again, looking for a meal; Couple of pink-foots; 4+ little egret; 2 roe deer at least on merse.  Carsethorn c20+ swallow - hawking around; 1 autumn wheatear - (pic) female I think trying to feed around gardens but busted right leg clearly a real hindrance (hence pic!). May not make it out of the village methinks; 1 chiffchaff - in shore gardens.  No scaup or knot as yet. Rain stopped play.

1415 - 1515 Quiet again.  6 bar-tailed godwit.  5 little egret.  1 peregrine tucking into Sunday lunch on the merse. 3 swallow Nothing unusual on Carsethorn foreshore today, in fact not a lot about.

c 1530-1730 Carse Bay  Disappointingly fewer birds around after winds & rain.  3+ little egret c15 black-tailed godwit Carsethorn  2 whimbrel  1 black-tailed godwit  1 bar-tailed godwit  Seasonal usuals but no sign of scaup yet.
