WWT Caerlaverock

As reported on BirdGuides, GWE today from Saltcot Observatory Tower hide. First seen to the east on the merse but later much closer & straight ahead from the upper level. About the same location Marsh Harrier goes to ground & out of sight, which another visitor reported as showing well today, though I saw it not. PJ

Scaup

28th. Nice pair of Scaup, male & female, close to shore at Bishop Burn during high tide this lunchtime. Nigel Willits.

Corsewall Point

A strong NW wind brought a steady stream of Gannet, Kittiwake and auks southwards, otherwise birding was hard work highlights 2 Little Gull, a late Little Tern, small number of Manx Shearwater, a possible Balearic and a larger Shearwater spp, a single very distant Arctic Skua and small number of Eider. Saturday. Balearic Shearwater reported from Maryport & Curlew Sandpiper at Sandhead today. Via BirdGuides.

Little Stint

Saturday. 1 at Barnskirk Point on river Annan, with 3 Dunlin and the army of Redshank that frequents here, Also notable were 3 Greenshank and 30 odd Black-tailed Godwits. Bill Jamieson.

Clayshant, Sandhead

Saturday. 1 juv Curlew Sandpiper, 26 Pale-bellied Brent Geese (at least 10 juvs) and good number of juv Ringed Plovers. Gavin Chambers. 

Fleet Estuary

Saturday: 20 Common Scoter, 1 R-t-Diver off Barlocco Island, 4 Greenshank, 30 Ringed Plover and 6 Sandwich Tern. Ardwall Island and Carrick shore, Wheatear and 70 Swallow around Knockbrex. Ian Bainbridge.

PFG

50 pinkfeet southbound high over Gatehouse of Fleet this morning. Iain Bainbridge. 46+ Pink-feet seen distantly on the mudflats off Crook of Baldoon - same flock? No sign of Scaup on the lagoons, just a couple of Tufties. Nigel Willits.

Recent Sightings

Today - adult winter Mediterranean Gull at Carsethorn roosting north of village at high tide. Over weekend - 11 Black-tailed Godwits at Carsethorn and an Osprey carrying a fish heading north up the Nith Estuary. Last week - Merlin and adult winter Mediterranean Gull at Southerness. 2 Swifts at the Mull of Galloway on the Friday. Gavin Chambers.

Kirkcudbright Ranges

Yesterday. Kirkcudbright Ranges this eve; 35 Chiffchaffs in willows and sycamores by lake. Spotted Flycatcher, Tree Pipit and a probable Goshawk. Barry O'Dowd.

Bits & Pieces

A single Swift over Glenluce yesterday evening. Local screamers have not been seen/heard since Aug 15th. 25 Wigeon & 95 Mergansers off Balyett, Loch Ryan this afternoon. 7 Little Egret at Bishop Burn. Nigel Willits. 

RSPB Crook of Baldoon

A female type Scaup on the lagoon north of car park (found by G Chambers) this morning still present this afternoon. 2 Water Rail calling from the lagoon south of the car park yesterday. Ivan Lang. 

Fleet Bay

Skyreburn, Monday evening. 400 swallows and 200 pied wagtails in reedbed roost near the Teapot. Whimbrel, Greenshank, Water Rail and Hooded Crow for extras. Iain Bainbridge.

Got lucky witnessing a couple of Water Rail squabbling plus good, though too brief views of 1. Seen from Folly Pond hide looking left of the Scottish Water hide, working the edge of the reeds. Also seen along the open mud just left of FPH. PJ

Adult winter Little Gull on mudflats from village on falling tide (18:30). Gavin Chambers.

3 Green Sandpiper on river Annan, between mein water and upper Brydekirk. W. Jamieson.

Piltanton Burn

This pm. Sanderling 22, Golden Plover 60+, Ringed Plover 120, Turnstone 25, Greenshank 2, Whimbrel 1, Barwit 8. Also Wheatear, several Stonechats & a constant movement of swallows. A peregrine caused chaos among the high tide roost but failed to catch anything. Nigel Willits.
