Possible Lesser Scaup

Update received from Anna ; Hi Pete     I ve been here since 8:50 and puzzled, but it's only just brightened up. I don't think it's Lesser Scaup. It's bigger than Tufted and more Scauplike not pert like Lesser the beak tip I can see is black and as it's on the opposite side of the loch I don't think I would see that on Lesser. Sadly I can't make any colour on head it just looks black from here the sides are a bit messy not cleanly marked it may be a young bird . Sorry, Anna.

Possible LESSER Scaup

Hi Pete         Wet morning but I am looking forward to daylight to have a look I will take the big scope as visibility is likely to be poor but already I am optimistic It looks neat, I think the hybrid would look bigger so will email you later.  Anna

Lesser Scaup? Auchenreoch Loch

I've viewed the phone footage I managed, with poor eyesight & rubbish light & at distance. Fortunately, it's possible to see the bird being different, with grey mantle/back & the rear crown bump. Problem is, I need to get the file size down without too much loss of detail!  Anyone daring to access the 181mb size file click here ! nb: probably better to download rather than trying to play. It gets stuck! Pete

Mandarin duck

Location: Auchenreoch Loch  Details: reported to be 7 of late.  Per Anna White.

LEO & HH

From Twitter ; " WWTCaerlaverock: Daily sightings of long-eared owl and hen harrier make the Saltcot hide at @WWTCaerlaverock the place to be over the New Year period. Got to be worth a visit?"

Possible Lesser Scaup?

Something very like on southern far side of Auchenreoch Loch this pm.   Hanging out with tufted. Grey mantle, diffuse to rear, white rump evident when jumping out of the water to dive. Bump on rear crown. Distant view on high mag so with poor light, not so much clear  detail. Could be a hybrid too.  Pete

Longtown Cumbria

Female RN Duck on ponds next Gretna Road. Per BirdGuides.  Only just over the border! ๐Ÿ‘ Worthy of note methinks.

Hen Harrier

28/12 20:47 Dumfries & Galloway : Caerlaverock : Hen Harrier, ringtail again today. Per BirdGuides.

Carsethorn/Powillimount/Gillfoot Bay

Low tide. Carsethorn Black-tailed godwit today off the village & I counted 184, so down on yesterday. 7 bar-tailed godwit. One of the 2 current whimbrel found.  Apart from that, the ploughed waterlogged fields are attracting a lot of lapwing.  Powillimount/Gillfoot Bay   Busy with folk & car park overflowing.  2 rt diver & 4 gc grebe offshore. Raft of c50 wigeon.  50-75 dunlin, 10 knot. Harbour porpoise.  Nothing unusual found.  Pete

Carse Bay & Carsethorn

Generally this pm ; Couple little egret far merse.  Large numbers pintail, wigeon & teal. Not a single scaup found!  250 or more black-tailed godwit, probably WWT refugees but I've not seen so many there before.   Around 10 bar-tailed godwit.  1 greenshank.  100 or so dunlin.  9 rbm, 6 male.  No whimbrel found but Christmas walkers regularly may explain. A lot of ringed plover & I think the curlew will have moved to surrounding fields once disturbed. Good flock of pfgs with the odd barney in fields between there & Kirkbean. 1 goldeneye, a few little grebe & 2 mute swan on Kirkhouse fishery.   Pete

Ken Dee Marshes

Another good morning at Ken Dee/Loch Ken. 136 Greenland White-fronted Geese in field by car park showing well.  51 Pintail on Loch Ken to the south, plus 300+ Teal. Willow Tit showed really well around the second hide, occasionally coming to the feeder. 3 Goosander and Goldeneye on the lagoon. Gavin

Scoters

Just received this from Ian Bainbridge.  Must go see these. David H Hi David Raft of 2500 scoters off Auchenlarie / Ravenshall Point - well worth a look if you're going to Newton Stewart ! Ian

Carsethorn - Borron Pt WeBS

Managed to get it done before the rain. A cold ½°C. Interesting to see how much sands have been shifted "from here, to there" whilst walking the shore. Just one barnacle corpse being predated by crow but another bird not very active on the shore, maybe on the way out. However, geese clearly in adjacent fields...  Nothing unusual found, though you don't scrutinise when WeBS-ing! Don't have time. Generally low numbers, again.  "Best birds" 2 whimbrel - a joy  Several bar-tailed godwit  1 rt diver  1 snipe  Dozen+ grey plvr 11 knot No scaup seen today.  Pete

GWE

Flippin' 'eck! ๐Ÿ˜จ๐Ÿ”ญ. A sighting ๐Ÿ‘€!  20/12 19:32 Dumfries & Galloway : Great Egret, Heck one on far bank although distant (11:00). Per BirdGuides.

Loch Ken/Ken Dee

Image
A WeBS count of RSPB Ken Dee and southern end of Loch Ken this morning produced some nice figures, highlights: 11 Whooper Swans, 179 Mallard, 153 Teal, 73 Wigeon, 6 Pintail, 67 Greylag Geese, 244 Canada Geese, and 115 Greenland White-fronted Geese (from Ken Dee car park). Also amongst the Canada's was what appears to be a Richardson's Canada Goose, though its wild origins are a little suspect given who it is hanging out with. Seen on Loch Ken (NX6881069979) between the reserve and Loch Ken Holiday Park Gavin

Todd's or Lesser? - Mersehead

Video of the bird here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc0oAy7b1S0 It would appear likely that this may not be a Todd's but perhaps a Lesser (parvipes), but who knows! Gavin

GWE & HH ringtail

Both birds, still at WWT Caerlaverock 3rd December. Per BirdGuides.

Mersehead

Thought you should be the first to know that there is a probable Todd's Canada Goose in the field behind the car park at Mersehead among the Barnacle Geese. Gavin
