On the river bridge, at the entrance to Drumjohn Farm, 4 Goosanders, Kingfisher & Grey Heron, Spotted Flycatcher, Great Spotted Woodpecker & Willow Warbler singing. A Raven was croaking overhead and a few Butterflies on the wing. Chris Baines.

Carsluith : high water Friday 29th July

5 Greenshank, 12 Dunlin, 10 Ringed Plover, Curlew, Oystercatcher & Common Sandpiper, 3 Sandwich Terns & Cormorant's. I started to walk up the beach to get a closer look at the roost when 2 Ringed Plover started flying over my head and doing distraction display. I assume they had bred and young birds present so made a hasty retreat. Chris and Pat Baines

Browhouses & Seafield

Highlights from Browhouses & Seafield over high tide: 9 Greenshank & 10 Blackwit at Browhouses and 2 Whimbrel at Seafield. Paul Massey

Brow Well

Great White Egret at Brow Well. Flew over merse before landing in channel. Also adult Med Gull, Greenshank, juv Peregrine & 15 Little Egret. Paul Massey.

Silage Cutting - Kirkgunzeon

Ystrdy 10 Red Kite over fields being cut plus lots of Herring, Lesser-black Backed & Black-headed Gulls made an impressive sight. No Quail calling from Barley field but farmer tells me they are present every year. Whilst we past the time of day, a female Sparrowhawk attacked the mixed sparrow flock in the hedge & caught one. Gillfoot Bay - Southerness

1 whimbrel, c15-20 sandwich tern including juvs being fed, c40 golden plvr, returned turnstones, dunlin & ringed plvr. Juv sedge warbler & juv whitethroat hanging out together. PJ

RN Grebe - Loch Ryan

Andy Russell informs me that ; "Grebe was well offshore, didn't look like coming inland and a scope was needed to have proper views of it". So, if you're looking, look hard, through a scope. PJ

RN Grebe

26/07 20:59 Stranraer one in flight north of the railway station this evening. Per BirdGuides. There appears to be a bird roaming the Loch Ryan area for about a week now. Anyone visiting needs to take note & hopefully, get lucky ๐Ÿ€! PJ

Glenkiln

Today by the north end of the reservoir at Margreig Farm entry; Wheatear, all the hirundines, Spotted Flycatchers with young, 500 yds north Whinchat Stonechat & Wheatears also with young. Anna W.

West Galloway - Recent Sightings

Luce Bay, Sandhead , yesterday - 2 arctic skua's headed west along beach, later seen harassing feeding sandwich terns. At least 95 sandwich terns and 9 common terns roosting at the mouth of the Culmore Burn . Good number of manx shearwater not too far out, perhaps feeding in bay. Mull of Galloway , yesterday - sand martin, house martin, swallow and swifts all moving south, no wonder there was a hobby the other day! 15 bottlenose dolphins off foghorn showed well for a small crowd of visitors. Crook of Baldoon , yesterday - 2 eclipse male wigeon, 3 teal and 3 little grebe on main lagoon. Gavin

Crook of Baldoon 16th July

Hi, I've never seen Sand Martins at Baldoon before. Also a Peregrine sighting up a gull. Regards, Maisie Welsh

RN Grebe - The Wig

Received from Stephen Grover today ; "..  Red-necked Grebe at the Wig, Loch Ryan, on the 12th and 13th July. @RareBirdAlertUK.   PS: Red-necked Grebe, an adult in summer plumage, still showing well at the Wig. Best to catch it before the sun comes up and the bird gets lost in the blurry haze!" Gratefully received! Anyone nearby get yourself lucky ๐Ÿ€ PJ

Garden - fledged of 2022

Mainsriddle : overall it seems that we've had around 15+ fledged tree sparrows visiting, across 2 broods by a number of adult birds. A juv nuthatch & gsw have been visiting. Siskins have recently returned with juvs & all other usual garden visitors have bred locally. Robin, blackbird, song & mistle thrush, house sparrow, goldfinch, chaffinch, willow warbler & chiffchaff. Greenfinch & lt-tit, nor yellowhammer or blackcap seen yet. PJ

Annan at Newbie

Had a walk down yesterday just before HT. Good numbers of Common Sandpiper c50 including a group of 22 nr the mouth of the river. Nmbrs of Redshanks & Egrets building up. Whitethroats & Sedge Warblers still singing. Mick Lennon

3 day trip

Tuesday 12th July 2022 : Glenlochar  ; Kingfisher, Grey Heron, Swallows, Sand Martins, Blackcap + Herring Gull caught a fish.  Laghead Farm , just a couple of fields past the parking for Loch Whinyeon, in field on the right, cut for silage, top left of field not yet cut - a Corncrake calling from 1420 to 1430.  Also Stonechat & Whinchat. (Does the farmer know something!). Approach to Gatehouse of Fleet an Osprey over & Common Gull.  Crook of Baldoon , Little Grebe, 2 Little Egrets, Mute Swan with young, Swallows & Sand Martins.   Wednesday 13th July, Trip to the Mull of Galloway : Terally Bay ; Sandwich Terns, Gannets, Kittiwakes & Cormorants.  The Mull , managed to pick out 1 Puffin, Guillemots, Black Guillemots, Razorbill, Fulmar, Gannets, Shags, Kittiwakes - having a good breeding season here. On the Headland , Stonechat & Wheatear. Auchenmalg ,   Peregrine Falcon.   Thursday 14th July : Carsluith  ; 9 Common Sandpipers, Ringed Plover, Curlews

Annan at Newbie

River needs checking for any returning/passing waders, like the usual spot red. PJ ๐Ÿ‘

Grasshopper, not

None for me. Usual place of wet rushy grassland nearby has been converted into, is it, "improved grassland"?! Improved for cattle, what else? Snipe, grasshopper warbler et al , gone.  I wonder whether the reduced tern presence is flu-connected. ๐Ÿค”PJ.

"Gropper ", dare I say ?

Bit late in the season, but just had my first grasshopper warbler, at Barfil, Crocketford. DH

Loch Fern - 6th July

Looks like it could be good in the winter months for wildfowl but quiet at the present time of year. Lots of herring gulls. Lesser black-backed gulls & 2 great black-backed gulls coming in to bath & preen. 2 cormorants, mute swan, mallard with young, moorhen with young. Swallows & sand martins hawking over the loch. In the woodland garden warbler, blackcap & jay, red kites & buzzards overhead. 1 banded demoiselle was a suprise find. Chris Baines

Kirkgunzeon

Yesterday pm. Bike ride along the Milton road produced 4 singing Sedge Warblers, Yellowhammer & 1 Whitethroat. On the river from the bridge in the village a Kingfisher. Chris Baines

Whitehaven - Cumbria

Sabines Gull offshore so could turn up off D&G shores for the sharp-sighted. PJ
