1 reported in the southernmost alder plantation of Auchie Glen, southern Rhins. 

Fleet Valley

26th. 45 whoopers heading south, new arrivals I suspect. Redwings in flocks of 10-30. Ian Bainbridge. 

Black Tern

Surprised to learn that the bird is still present a WWT Caerlaverock, seen from the Saltcot Observatory Tower hide. Also 2 GWE & ♂️ Hen Harrier. 

Garlieston

A couple of Swallow and a single House Martin flying around the harbour this afternoon. A few Brent Geese in the bay. Gavin Chambers.

WWT Caerlaverock

25th. Hen Harrier (male), Great White Egret and Peregrine Falcon all viewed from the Saltcot Observatory Tower hide this afternoon. Bill Jamieson.

Moffat

GWE reported still at Station Park yesterday (24th) afternoon. 

Snow Goose

It would appear 2 Snow Geese are still hanging around RSPB Mersehead, both photographed together yesterday (24th Oct). Gavin Chambers.

Mandarins

2 Male Mandarin Duck on the pond in Colliston Park, Dalbeattie. Locals told me today the Mandarins have been at the Park for ages - that was why the Council didn't cut the grass on the island during the Summer!!!! so Birders were last to know! Anna White. 

Cetti's Warbler & GWE

1 at RSPB Crook of Baldoon this afternoon. Ivan Lang. 1 also at RSPB Mersehead yesterday 23rd from the Meida Hide & a GWE in the Southwick Burn there today. Anna White. 

Black Tern

Still at WWT Caerlaverock east of Saltcot Observatory Tower hide, close where the new pools have been excavated. 

Black Tern

1 reported at WWT Caerlaverock this pm. Perhaps diverted by the new groundworks. 

Long-eared Owl

1 at Caerlaverock NNR today. Also, at WWT Caerlaverock, 1 Whinchat, 2 Chiffchaff, 3 leucistic Barnacle Geese amongst flocks (1 with similar appearance to Blue (Ed. morph Snow?) Goose, but not). David Brown.  Ed. That's a lot of leucistics with so many at RSPB Mersehead too! 

Carsethorn & Southerness

A poor WeBS show suggesting a Peregrine through or human disturbance. I think I just missed a large flock of Knot before counting. A single Bar-tailed Godwit & I think 6 Grey Plover the best birds. Where Carsethorn I was hot, it was cold at Southerness. Some typical for the time of year birds at the point, with a Red-throated Diver, several Common Scoter & 3 Guillemot offshore. A large flock of Knot c5-600 alighted the point briefly. Otherwise, usual Turnstone & Redshank but no Dunlin, Ringed Plover nor evidence of a Purple Sandpiper. Should be on the east coast! PJ

Snow Goose

Single Snow Goose again at RSPB Mersehead today (21st Oct) along with 4 leucistic Barnacle Geese across the site amongst 4000+ BG. Gavin Chambers.

WWT Caerlaverock

Moffat

Great White Egret reported at Station Park. 8 Ring Ouzel seen in the Moffat hills on 19th. 

Green Sandpiper

Bird flushed out of the Cargen Pow, Islesteps by high water & rainfall. Flash pool hugely increased as designed to take floodwaters. PJ

RSPB Crook of Baldoon

2 male Hen Harrier and 2 GWE at the southern end of reserve. Also Goosander, all whilst doing the WeBS count. Ivan Lang. 

Auchenroddan Forest

Goshawk (1 female), Crossbill (1), Redpoll (4+), Siskin (2), Bullfinch (2), Stonechat (2), Buzzard (3), Sparrowhawk (1). A Red Squirrel also worth a mention. Species count in here is around 37, but the signature bird is most definitely Crossbill. Bill Jamieson. 

Sooty Shearwater

1 reported past Isle of Whithorn this afternoon.

RSPB Mersehead

Snow Goose at Meida Hide this afternoon. Ivan Lang. 

Southerness HT+

Birds forced to assemble east of Mersehead Bay. 7 or 8 Grey Plvr, c50 Golden Plvr, c20-30 Sanderling c12 Bar-tailed Godwit, a few hundred Dunlin, c1000 Knot, usual others. Guillemot fly-by the point, 3 Rock Pipit & an ad w Med Gull out of Gillfoot Bay scavenging the receding current for a few ๐Ÿ”‚. PJ

Auchenroddan Forest

Crossbills (18), at two different locations this morning. Also Redwing (20), Greenfinch (8), Siskin (2), Bullfinch (2), Goldcrest (1), large Goldfinch flock and a Raven (heard only). Bill Jamieson.

1 SG still at RSPB Mersehead. 120+ Scaup off Bishop Burn, Loch Ryan. 

14th October

102 Scaup reported off Bishop Burn, Loch Ryan & 2 Snow Geese at RSPB Mersehead still but origin under question. 

Carsethorn

Around 200 Scaup distantly offshore at low tide, 635 Redshank, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Knot & 1 Golden Plover among the 100s of Oystercatcher. Gavin Chambers. 2 Greenshank in Carse Gut rising tide. PJ. 

Bennan (Glenkiln)

Ringtail Hen Harrier hunting west of Bennan at 3 30 pm today. Anna White. 

Creetown

Goshawk, Merlin, up to a dozen Redwing. A single bird seen at Cairnsmore NNR, where a Fieldfare was heard tho' not located. A great deal of passerine activity at the top of reserve by Gatehouse Station. Our bird of the day, a male Crossbill. Kev & Sue Richardson.

Another YBW

Alyns had another YBW, this time at Lady Bay, Loch Ryan. I found a Whitethroat for my efforts around Carsethorn, several Chiffs. Gavin Chambers. 

Hen Harrier

Hen Harrier male, viewed from Saltcot Hide at WWT Caerlaverock. Also Stonechat and Meadow Pipit in decent numbers. Moved to Caerlaverock NNR; Kestrel 1f, Chiffchaff 4 and more Stonechat. Bill Jamieson.

Alyn (Chambers) has heard a YBW in the woodland along the path to Eggerness Point at Garlieston today. Gavin Chambers.

1 reported again on the merse at Caerlaverock Castle. 

Stairhaven

Gannets busy over the bay, however the most impressive sight, hundreds & hundreds of guillemots south down the bay. Also on the foreshore; Turnstone, Oystercatcher, Curlew, pied wagtails, pipits, 2 Wheatear, 40+ Greenfinch in the scrub, swallows & Merlin as we left. Kev & Sue Richardson.

A late female-type Wheatear at Bishop Burn this afternoon. Nigel Willits.

1 YBW by the footbridge Isle of Whithorn harbour this morning. GWE from Bruaich Hide RSPB Mersehead & RSPB Crook of Baldoon (GC & IL).

4th. GWE. Later in the morning one briefly on the merse at the Crook, along with a red-head Goosander. Ivan Lang.

Yellow-browed Warblers

1 down Auchie Glen and 2 on the west side of Isle of Whithorn harbour. I've found plenty of Chiffchaff at Mersehead. Gavin Chambers.

Two leucistics (Barnacle Geese) were photographed in the last few days on reserve. PS. A Great White Egret has been seen on the merse yesterday. Gavin Chambers.

Snow Goose - update

WWT Caerlaverock - 2 leucistic Barnacle Geese in flock in field LHS of row of cottages. Possibly the 2 "Snow Geese"? Robbie Purdie. Ed. Looking highly likely.

1 reported at Greyhill Road, Stoneykirk, nr West Freugh Airfield (well, not far away!).

2 reported at WWT Caerlaverock but not exactly where. 

Around Thornhill

3rd. Juv female Goshawk, 16 Buzzards and 7 Red Kites + many woodland birds. John Miles. 

Creetown

What looked like 2 Great White Egrets together on the northern end of the merse, viewed from A75 when passing at 8.30am this morning. Plenty of Little Egret around too. Gavin Chambers. 

Snow Goose

White-morph photographed at Bankend I believe. 

Wigtown Hide

A visit today on a descending tide was quiet but highlight a GWE on marsh north of the hide & a 2nd winter Med Gull leaving the high tide roost heading inland. Ivan Lang

Spotted Redshank

1 reported on mud bank, ebbing tide at Piltanton Burn. 

WWT Caerlaverock

2 Great White Egrets seen from Saltcot tower. One out towards Ruthwell the other out towards Criffel. Large flocks of Barnacles present and 3 Whooper Swans counted. Robbie Purdie.
