Cluden Water

Loch Ryan

Image
2 Com Terns in the harbour showing well (but despite slight black tipped red bill, latterly ID'd by boffins as Arctic!). At Bishop Burn 43 Red-breasted Mergansers. 2 Eider with 5 young & several Gannets. Skyreburn. Opposite the cafรฉ, 1 Hooded Crow in the road. Chris & Pat Baines. Ed. Perhaps it's the dark edge to the primaries but to me, legs look too long. What chance a hybrid? Anyone? P.

Fountainbleau & Ladypark NR

Image
A brief visit did not produce many birds. Several Swallows & House Martins hawking low over the reserve, 3 juv Pied Wagtails, a Garden Warbler was still singing. A very confiding Stock Dove was unusual plus Red Admiral & Meadow Brown butterflies. Chris Baines.

Piltanton

A hybrid Carrion x Hooded Crow at the Piltanton estuary this evening. Distribution of pale/dark plumage quite close to Hooded, but the lighter areas were not light enough, especially the mantle which had a distinctly muddy tone. A couple of Dark Green Fritillaries and an adder in the dunes. Nigel Willits.

Birdwatching and Ornithology Holidays in Dumfries & Galloway - Arbigland Estate

I've never encountered Wood Warbler, Corn Bunting, Goshawk & certainly not Lesser-spotted Woodpecker when exploring Arbigland Estate over 15 yrs. The latter would be a miracle or profound "unusual happening" at least! I'm not there 24/7 but I think these claims are rather suspect, except for historical records of Corn Bunting perhaps, a migrating Wood W & fly-through Gos. Lesser-spot at the bird table? I'd have to see that to believe it! "don't dismiss out of hand"?  https://www.arbiglandestate.co.uk/local-activities/birdwatching/   Beyond this, farm practices are to be applauded as they are singularly the only local farming concern which takes environmentally sensitive practices on board, as far as the eyes can tell. Short-eared Owl seen at Threave NTS today. PJ

Swallows - reduced numbers?

Barry O'Dowd has asked the following question on the Twitter account. I can only say that I think there are fewer birds this year, which may be partly due to the difficult weather conditions on migration through Europe. However, I've not read or sought out corroborative evidence to this effect. Anyone have any supportive evidence for Barry's assertion?   "A local farm with great habitats near Kirkcudbright has just 10prs of swallows this year. Last year there were around double this number. What trends have other people found?" BO'D.  Ivan Lang replies; "If you look on the reporting rate on bird track for d & g it indicates that in May it was lower than historical average but by June the rate had increase to above historical average so indicating late arrival of birds."

Young Wheatears

A couple of juvenile Wheatears with their scaly breasts at Glenchamber this afternoon, east of New Luce. Also a Curlew there. Nigel Willits.

Langholm Moor

Message from David Smith on Twitter dated 28th May. "Osprey over Langholm Moor this morning. Also 3 x Tree Pipit, 1 x Redstart, 1 x Spotted Flycatcher & many singing Whinchat. Male Hen Harrier as you would expect."

Mull of Galloway 1st June

Image
The usual suspects incl. Guillemots, Razorbills, Shags, Fulmars & Kittiwakes appear to be doing well with good numbers of birds on the cliff top  ledges. A small number of Manx Shearwaters past the headland. Several Wheatears & Stonechats. We've not seen Peregrine here in recent visits. Chris & Pat Baines.

Loch Kindar

Osprey caught fish then headed generally north 13:30 until out of heat-haze sight. Drake Goldeneye still, 1 drake Tufted Duck & GC Grebe with singing Garden Warbler near Ardwall Farm. PJ

Criffel Walk

Bird wise, apart from the ubiquitous Meadow & a possible Tree Pipit, several Red Grouse were a welcome sight, including a male flight displaying on the rise from Knockendoch. A Red Kite circled the hill a few times plus several Buzzards & a probable Peregrine. Charming to encounter tame, picnic-scrap-eating Skylarks around the cairn giving close photo opps. Back around Loch Kindar, I noticed a drake Goldeneye, which is unusual for June AFAIK. Finally, a Green Woodpecker heard around the Mid Glen, Criffel walk car park. PJ
